Ford, G.M. sales down as buyers spurn SUVs and look for fuel efficiency
Detroit automakers Ford and G.M. are cursing Prius drivers right about now. Sales figures and market share for both companies were down in April, as car buyers turned their fickle affections from gas-gulping SUVs to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles -- specifically those manufactured by Asian rivals Toyota and Nissan. In fact, Toyota reports that April was the most successful month in its history, with sales up 21.3 percent from April 2004, thanks in large part to booming demand for its hybrid Prius and other gas-sipping vehicles. A Ford sales analyst acknowledged the role of record gas prices in decreased SUV sales, but G.M. argued that gas prices weren't making much of a difference, pointing to an increase in large truck sales.

small, 4WD diesel trucks available today!
Well, in Costa Rica, at least. My wife and I spent most of this month vacationing in Costa Rica. We saw many different 4WD diesel cars and trucks, but the hilux stood out in my memory. *sigh*, if only it were possible to own one in the United States!

Re: FryBrid
Kramer, Thanks for posting this. I will have to go check out their biodiesel prices and supplier. My wife works at Swedish Hospital right by there so it might even be convenient for her to swing by and get some when necessary. Thanks for the info!
|
Re: FryBrid
excellent! I hope this continues to grow. the b100/SVO switching is neat.
|
Re: importing foreign cars
didn't know that. that's cool. Nice. I still like the german cars better, but that Jeep looks pretty good. Like the turbo-diesel too.
|
FryBrid
[link] This place is up on Capital hill, they now pump b100 and they do work on converting diesel engines to take SVO. Pretty interesting. -Kramer

Re: importing foreign cars
Volvo does have a new car program where you can ship it from Sweden, here is some more info: [link] And the new Jeep Liberty CRD is actually coming from the factory with B5 in it and that's in Toledo Ohio. [link]

Re: importing foreign cars
I couldn't find any, but I did see this scary thing: [link] Unlike the Passat, its engine can act as a 30 kilowatt generator. The Passat however, has a nicer stereo.
|
Re: importing foreign cars
Here's a link to the jeep: [link] 30 mpg and it looks cool too. Maybe you could get the folks at Chrysler to leave one off the boat for you. The passat with 4-motion and the TDI engine gets 38mpg highway, has nice styling, and is available here in the US. Nice interior too.

Re: '82 diesel rabbit
I haven't had time to go check it out yet. I'm having a huge debate internally whether to buy it or not. I don't have a ton of money right now, and I'm a full time student (no job as of now). I can afford to buy the car, but don't know much about insurance and the likes. I wouldn't be driving it in Seattle, it would be strictly a
|
Re: importing foreign cars
You might check out the Touareg with a V10 Turbo Diesel and full-time 4wd or the Passat with a turbo-diesel, then you wouldn't have to import. Also, I think Jeep makes a Cherokee with a diesel for export to UK.
|
Re: importing foreign cars
Thank you! I did a similar search and found the government site saying, basically, "it's very difficult to import a car..." blah blah blah. I was looking more for a full-service importer or freight forwarder, of which there were many good links on the BMW site you mentioned. I don't want to hear "we can't do it" (heard this from Volvo and VW

Re: importing foreign cars
Found a couple of interesting links by googling: importing automobiles This is from BMWs site, but it has a do-it-yourself section that would apply to any car: [link] General importing info for cars: [link]

importing foreign cars
I'm interested in importing a 4x4/4wd/all-wheel-drive turbo diesel station wagon or 4x4/4wd/all-wheel-drive turbo diesel coupe. Anyone know of a company that helps import cars from [wherever these kinds of cars might be made] to the United States? Anyone have any good links to information about importing cars?

Re: '82 diesel rabbit
I had an '81 so I know a few things: *look for RUST on the body (around hatchback) and the strut towers under the hood, plus under the battery *the aluminum heads tend to warp and then it burns coolant (white exhaust smoke) *radiators get plugged up some and it overheats which is very bad for head *timing belt-tensioner-waterpump P&L+tax is about $500 (engine is toast

Re: b20 or b100?
To answer my own question- Today's price for B20 per gallon on Harbor Island is: $2.419 [they have free big bumper stickers too] cash
|
Re: '82 diesel rabbit
I would agree with the opinion that if it starts and runs easily then it is likely that all is well. If you want a mechanic to look at it you should have them check the compression on all cylinders and check that it is in or at least near spec. Low compression is the major thing that will keep a diesel running well or cause it to not run at
